Royce Gracie

Visiting Master Instructor

Royce’s reputable career as a fighter began in 1993 after winning the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. The single purpose of the early UFC’s was to determine which style of martial arts was the most effective in a real fight. These early events had no weight classes and no time limits. Fighters were allowed to use any strikes, take downs or submissions they pleased, and the only way to win was by knockout or submission.

Royce (pronouced “Hoyce”) was choosen by his father to represent the Gracie Family and their art. Discipline after discipline was defeated by the slight 6’1″, 180 pound Royce Gracie. His opponents consistently outweighed him by more than 50 pounds. He went on to win 3 UFC titles and today is the only man in the history of mixed martial arts competition to successfully defeat four opponents in a single night.

Royce’s success was convincing proof of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s superiority and effectiveness and at the same time, made him an internationally recognized martial arts icon. After his UFC victories, Royce continued his career as a fighter. In Japan he dominated Japanese Judo Olympic gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida and submitted 486-pound, 6’8″ Sumo Yokozuna Akebono in less than 3 minutes. Royce Gracie is the founder of the world wide Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Network. He now spends most of his time teaching Jiu-Jitsu throughout the Network, including here at Dragon Martial Arts Academy in Port Alberni, BC Canada. Royce is known for being a patient, thorough and down-to-earth instructor, and through his lifestyle and demeanor, sets an exceptional example for all his students.
