Dragon Martial Arts Academy (DMA),

Is more than a martial arts school we are a family dedicated to teaching traditional ITF (International Tae Kwon-Do Federation) Tae Kwon-Do and Gracie Jiu-jitsu (Brazilian Jiu-jitsu) as our core curriculum. Over the years we have grown like family does and now have 3 affiliate schools in Victoria, Comox and Salt Spring Island run by former students and colleagues.

In 1973 Master Kwon opened his school in Port Alberni. Master Kwon was trained in traditional Taekwon-Do in Korea. At 2nd Dan (degree), when 4th Dan was required to make the team, Master Kwon was the youngest to be chosen for the Korean Demonstration Team due to his exceptional sparring skills. He came to Canada in 1970 to attend the University of Victoria and decided to teach Tae kwon-do, he founded Kwon’s Taekwon-Do in 1973. Master Kwon opened a school in Port Alberni with Mr. Mark Koff as assistant instructor.

In 1974 Master Warren Lee started his training with Mr. Koff and Master Kwon. He was one of Master Kwons fastest students to move up the belt ranks and was able to attain First Dan (1st Degree) black belt within 2 1/2 years. In 1980, Mr. Lee took over instruction at the school and continued the same traditions. Over the past 23 years the Port Alberni school has built up a solid reputation for student achievement and produced many champion martial artists. In the past 23 years hundreds of students have passed through the doors. Now, some children of former students are training at the school. In 2000, Year of the Dragon, Mr. Lee formed Dragon Martial Arts Academy while developing a relationship with Larry Lam’s Studio Kicks in Los Gatos California.

The School continues to teach traditional ITF style Taekwon-Do but also cross-trains in other martial arts such as Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, weapons training and acrobatic kicks. Our child character development program is a huge hit with all students and parents alike.
